Karen Turner Jan28

Karen Turner

Los Angeles singer/songwriter Karen Turner lays out an icy lament in her song “Beacon.” The uncertain noise at the start of the song lets you know that you’re gonna get hurt. It’s a truly sublime introduction to a disconsolate song. Karen’s authentic and unpretentious vocal delivery will make your mood go cold… and you’ll like it. Surprisingly this song is almost five minutes long, much longer than most pop tunes, but even five minutes doesn’t seem long enough when you just want wrap yourself in a sub-zero sentiment. This is a perfect song for a 3:00 am playlist. If you don’t have one, start here… Kate Bush, Fionna Apple and Karen Turner....

Matt Romagna Jan04

Matt Romagna

New Jersey based singer/songwriter Matt Romagna denies you of a bad day with his song “We Will Be Alright.” With an organic vibe reminiscent of the great singer/songwriters of the 60’s and 70’s, this joyful, uplifting, foot-tapping tune is a great example of what contemporary folk music should sound like. As with most well crafted songs, it’s natty sound and catchy chorus will easily find it’s way into your life’s soundtrack. Jesse Rosenthal Oct23

Jesse Rosenthal

Jesse Rosenthal is a singer/songwriter/pianist from Bainbridge Island, Washington. In addition to possessing a fluid voice, he’s also a brilliant composer of soul-piercing baroque pop music. His song “To Hold an Angel” is expressive, poetic and rich in sentiment. Its lush emotional content gives it a theatrical feel à la great modern Broadway musicals such as “Spring Awakening.” Although heartfelt music is out there, it seems to be harder to come by these days. It’s good to find an artist like Jesse to fortify the genre.   For more of Jesse’s music, check out his “Brittle Little Star” EP on...

Freyr Oct22

Freyr

Freyr Flodgren is a Swedish/Icelandic singer/songwriter currently living in the UK. Having performed and recorded with several bands over the past few years, he is now promoting his solo work.  His song “What are We?” has a beautifully calm and introspective feel to it, a common thread in a lot of his work. His voice is flawless and his guitar playing is melodic yet uncomplicated. It’s obvious that Freyr is a technically good singer/songwriter, but what really makes this track great is that it just feels real. That’s something that can’t be taught.     Also check out this great track by...

Parisian Pass Oct20

Parisian Pass

“Parisian Pass” is a collective of 10 musicians out of Stockholm, founded by frontman/singer/songwriter Fredrik Hanefalk and producer/drummer/pianist Jon Eriksson. They’ve got a good collection of upbeat pop-folk songs, but they also write masterfully in the singer-songwriter genre. In particular, their song “Son” is a warm bath for your ears. Its smooth feel and Simon & Garfunkel-esque harmonies are a throwback to simpler times. If you want to slow down on a fast day, try listening to this...

Brenna v.K. Mar29

Brenna v.K.

Brenna v.K. (Brenna von Kleist) makes a fluent jump from electronic music producer to singer/songwriter with her debut single “Promises of Pretty Things.” Written, produced and arranged by Brenna, this song is a strong start to her nascent music career. It makes no difference if you’re into electronic or alternative music, this track seamlessly bridges the gap between the two. Brenna’s laid-back and effortless vocal delivery brings a human and vulnerable touch to a bed of frosty synths, comfortably blending woman and machine. Underneath it all, the drum track puts you in a trance-like state with a rhythm that feels like a constantly skipping heartbeat, making this a song that is not only heard, but felt. If you’ve ever been in a state of flux between numbness and a heavy heart, lay back and put this song on repeat. You’ve found your anthem.   Listen to the interview with Brenna v.K. as she talks about her debut release and more! http://www.musicaltribe.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/BrennaVonKleist-interview-V2.mp3     Watch the video for “Promises of Pretty Things.” Official website – brennavk.com Soundcloud – soundcloud.com/brennavk Facebook  – facebook.com/brennavk   Brenna v.K.’s top 10 favorite songs (in no particular order): 1. Cadence and Nathan Burns are a brother and sister duo based out of Edmonton, Alberta. Their song “Not the Girl for You” is a sweet, laid-back blend of folk and country music. Cadence’s smooth vocals blended with Nathan’s deft dobro playing make this track the perfect sedative for an anxious ear. You know a song is well-written when it can hold up with minimal instrumentation and production. This song proves that.     Official website –...

Flying Penguin Man Mar26

Flying Penguin Man

Not much is known about this obscure musician from Tokyo that calls himself “Flying Penquin Man,” except for the fact that he has a knack for faithfully creating 60’s and 70’s style pop rock music. His John Lennon-esque vocal style and retro sounding recordings could convince you into thinking that his songs are lost gems from the heyday of the British invasion. His track “Say to Me!” is sung in Japanese and sprinkled with a few English phrases. Tasty bass lines and sweet vocal harmonies are in no shortage in this one. It’s a beautifully crafted pop rock tune, and it showcases his solid grasp of melodic songwriting. On top of that, he plays all the instruments and sings all the vocals! Prepare to time...

Needshes Mar26

Needshes

Needshes is an indie rock band from Moscow comprised of members: Otto Salamov (vocals, acoustic guitar, keys, clarinet), Ilya Maksimov (guitars), Kirill Samsonov (bass guitar) and Andrew Kostikov (drums). Much of their material has a solid, driving, feel to it, however their track “I Know” shows that they have mastery of creating brilliant ballads as well. From the get-go, you’re pulled in by the incredibly clever use of a banjo, which gives the song a distinct and exotic sound. Couple that with Otto’s flawlessly smooth vocals and the band’s beautifully controlled  performance and you’ve got indie-ballad perfection. Do yourself a favor and check it out!   Check out the rest of their songs on...
